- checkpoints occur
- dirty buffers reach threshold
- there are no free buffers
- timeout occurs
- RAC (Real Application Clusters) ping request is made
- tablespace OFFLINE
- tablespace READ ONLY
- table DROP or TRUNCATE
- tablespace BEGIN BACKUP
